Child and Youth Friendly Greater Gawler Action Group
We believe children and young people, aged birth to 25 years, are capable and competent; they belong, connect and flourish in a safe, supportive and inclusive community.
The Child and Youth Friendly Greater Gawler Action Group (CYFGGAG) was established in 2011 by a passionate group of community members who were interested in embedding a “child and youth friendly” framework for Gawler.
The Group was part of the Department for Education and Child Development and Child Friendly South Australia state wide pilot in 2012. This involved a large scale children’s participation project that involved Town of Gawler, Department of Education and Child Development and other local organisations working together to profile children and young people’s voice and participation in the Greater Gawler area. Gawler was one of three communities that trialled the Child Friendly SA* framework which involved working together to build a stronger child and youth friendly community, where they are fully supported and valued as equal participants in community life.
*Child Friendly SA is the framework in South Australia that has been used to work towards and achieve UNICEF Australia Child Friendlies Cities recognition. CFSA was developed by the DECD in partnership with UNICEF Australia.
Child Friendly SA was supported and informed by the work of Professor Pauline Harris, de Lissa Chair in Early Childhood (research) and Harry Manatakis (Children’s Voices: A principled Framework for Children and Young People’s Participation as Valued Citizens and Learners).
A Community Forum was held in November 2014 to engage community interest in the CFSA initiative undertaken by the Group. This Forum also informed the Child Friendly SA Gawler Community Plan (see link as below).
The Group received Bronze Level Recognition as a Child Friendly City in October 2015 from UNICEF Australia. UNICEF Australia support the Group’s Recognition until 2019.
The Group will be guided by the CFSA Framework articulated through following 6 community goals (as below) and determined through the Child Friendly SA Gawler Community Plan.
